Surakarta – The Special Education (PLB) Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher’s Training and Education (FKIP), Sebelas Maret University (UNS), held an Orientation to the School Environment (PLP) on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to prepare students before they begin their fieldwork at schools, particularly Special Education Schools (SLB).

The event took place in two sessions. The first session was led by the Head of the UNS PLB Program, who briefed students on ethics, discipline, and coordination during the PLP, such as dressing neatly, implementing the 5S culture, arriving 15 minutes early, and appointing a coordinator for each group. Students were also encouraged to visit the schools before their official placement to get to know the school staff and to prepare learning materials tailored to the characteristics and needs of each child.

The second session was led by a teacher from the Sukoharjo Special Education School, who presented on the topic “Becoming a Happy Special Education Teacher.” She explained that the PLP is a platform for students to directly simulate teaching practices based on the knowledge gained during their coursework. She emphasized the importance of being a disciplined teacher, being fully present, and being open to two-way discussions with mentor teachers, as well as having the courage to express opinions without disregarding others’ perspectives. He also reminded students to ensure that teaching materials are appropriate for the children’s abilities and to discuss each child’s needs with their supervising teacher, so that the interventions provided are targeted effectively.

“Teachers must get to know the children they will be serving, including each child’s abilities, needs, characteristics, and circumstances,” he said, concluding the orientation session.

Through this orientation, it is hoped that the Special Education (PLB) students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS will be academically and mentally prepared to undertake their teaching practicum (PLP) with a sense of responsibility and joy while supporting children with special needs.
